“I never worry about diets. The only carrots that interest me are the carats in a diamond”. Zsa Zsa Gabor, we love your taste… and diamonds.
Keeping Your Diamonds Sparkling
Even though diamonds are the world’s hardest material, they can lose their sparkle if not properly cared for. Here’s 5 ways to keep your diamonds sparkling.
From diamond engagement rings, to tennis bracelets and stunning solitaires; there’s nothing quite like opening the gift of diamond jewellery. However, it isn’t immune from showing wear.
Exposure to differing temperatures, perfumes, cosmetics, and household chemicals can all dull the shine of your diamond. Therefore, keeping your diamonds clean not only keeps them looking their best, but helps to retain their value.
Using a microfibre cloth, wipe your diamond jewellery after every wear to remove any lotions, oils and dirt that have picked up throughout the day. It’s a great habit to get into.
This is the most common way to clean your diamonds and only requires a few household staples. Mix a small amount of washing up liquid with lukewarm water and submerge your diamond jewellery for 20-30 minutes. While the ring is wet, take a clean toothbrush and gently scrub the jewellery to remove any oils and dirt. Particularly focus on the underneath of the diamond, the settings and any grooves. Rinse your jewellery with warm water and pat dry with a microfibre cloth.
Many brands including Tiffany & Co offer jewellery cleaning solutions, created especially for fine jewellery and diamonds.
Try to avoid any abrasive materials such as toothpaste and anything laden with chemicals, as it can impact the metal of the jewellery and cause scratches.
More importantly try to avoid ultrasonic jewellery cleaners at home; while they’re great for professional use, the vibration of the machine can cause your diamonds to become loose in their setting with frequent use.
Cleaning your diamond jewellery once a week can help to prevent the build up of cosmetics, perfume and daily grime on your jewellery; however it’s recommended to take your diamonds to a jeweller every six months for a professional clean.
